Local urban environments are important influences of travel behaviours and public health. This is supported by the role of urban and transport planners who routinely plan environments that impact healthy and active behaviours. Walking and cycling are forms of active transport that contribute to recommended amounts of physical activity that are necessary for good health. Regular physical activity reduces chronic diseases including diabetes type II, ischaemic heart disease and stroke, and breast-, uterine-, lung- and colon-cancers.
